Half a paper heart
Left behind on an August day
Its other half torn away
In reckless haste
Half a paper heart
Floating in a muddy November puddle
Drifting with the wind
Slowly dissolving into grey slime
Half a paper heart
Frozen stiff inside February brown ice
Jagged edges immortalized
In knife-edged, murky glass
Half a paper heart
Caught on the edge of a soggy lawn
Pulled by a listless April wind
Despairing and tired
Half a paper heart
Left behind and forever alone
Perfect, unique, irreplaceable
And utterly destroyed
Ahh!! So very literary! Wonderful poem, Ellery!
